Girton Dispensary

Who can use the Dispensary?

Our Dispensary on Pepy's Way in Girton is allowed to dispense medications to patients who live more than a mile, as the crow flies, from their nearest pharmacy.

This includes people who live in the villages of Girton (only those living north of the A14 bridge) and Oakington.

National legislation prevents us from offering this service to anybody who lives within a mile of their nearest pharmacy.  Unfortunately that includes patients who live on the South Side of the A14 Bridge.

If we can dispense medication to you, but you are unable to collect your medication from the Girton dispensary within the dispensing hours, please let us know, and we can arrange for you to collect it from Huntingdon Road Surgery, who are open longer hours.

If you prefer a friend or family member can collect your medication on your behalf.

Ordering repeat prescriptions

Repeat prescriptions are those which you and the doctor have agreed you should take long-term.

  • Using the NHS app.  The first time you use the NHS app you will be taken through various ID checks.  There is no need to visit the surgery to do this so its the best option for most people.
  • Using our online portal.  To have access to this service please register for it in person at reception.  You will need to bring photo ID
  • Using the repeat prescription slip.  Each time you collect your medication from the dispensary, you will be given a repeat prescription slip, which lists all your current medication.  Remember to tick the items you require and return it to us through our letter box or by post.
  • In writing.  Please remember to include your name, address and date of birth.

For safety reasons

  • we cannot take requests by telephone
  • we cannot take requests by email

Delivery Service - Medical Reasons

We offer a a delivery service for those who for medical reasons cannot get to the Dispensary to collect their medication, and who have nobody who can collect on their behalf.  This service is funded by the Girton Town Charity.

If you feel you need this service, please speak to the Girton Dispensary Team.

Support YOUR Dispensary

We are committed to providing the best service we can to our patients, and feel that the Dispensary is an extremely important part of this committment to our village residents.

The Dispensary Team is a small team, who have worked closely with many of their patients for many years and get to know them well.  They provide a vital role to the community, not just in issuing medication, but in being a hub of community contact for everyone.  Many elderly patients rely on their contact with the Girton Team to help them avoid being socially isolated.

We consider continuity and personal knowledge of our patients to be very important to us and we work hard to acheive it.

The dispensary team work closely with the GPs and, unlike community pharmacies, they are able to access your GP patient notes directly.  That means that if there is a problem with your medication or some question, they are either able to answer it themselves or contact your GP directly for an answer.  Often that happens before you even come to collect your medication.

To keep Girton Dispensary running, we need patients to keep using it.  That is why when you register with us, if you are eligible to use Girton Dispensary we will offer it to you.   We will assume you want to benefit from this great service unless you tell us otherwise.

If you do have a problem with using the service, please let us know straight away so we can sort it out.  If you choose to go elsewhere (another pharmacy / online pharmacies) you are putting it at risk.  Remember it is YOUR Dispensary.

Unwanted Medicines?

If you have unwanted and unused prescribed medication, we are happy to dispose of it safely for you.  Just bring it to the Dispensary during working hours.

Unfortunately once the medication has left the premises we are unable to accept it back and offer it to another patient, even if you haven't opened that box.  That is why we ask all patients to check what is in the bag before they leave.

We are a recycling point for used inhalers - just bring them to reception during working hours.
